Electric or hydraulic elevator

When choosing an elevator, we usually have to choose between two categories: electric or hydraulic. These are two distinct categories, which would be good to know the characteristics, before choosing one, starting in particular from their needs, so as to better invest their money. So let’s see in detail what are the differences that can make one system or the other prefer.

The electric elevator

Electric lift means the platform for the vertical transport of people or goods whose movement is produced by the lifting machinery (gearlees or winch) delegated to the transmission of the movement to the ropes which are responsible for supporting the cabin. The electric motor starts working both in the ascent and in the descending phase.

It should be emphasized that this type of lift has been the subject of considerable evolution over time, if, in fact, originally these plants had the lifting machinery placed inside a machine room, currently it can also be placed inside of the compartment, a solution that is called MachineRoomLess, achieving a considerable saving of space. In this solution, in fact, also the control panel is placed inside the runway, making sure that the machine room, already existing or in any case no longer to be built, allows a space recovery for a different use .

On the other hand, with regard to the stroke compartment, it must be designed and constructed making it possible to keep the stresses of the lift as good as possible and ensuring that it is able to meet the fire-prevention requirements of the building. As a consequence of this the walls must be made using fireproof materials, making them smooth and painting them in white. Furthermore, in this type of system it is necessary to ensure constant ventilation towards the outside, whose section must vary according to the type of building they are going to serve.

By means of a hydraulic elevator we mean that technological device whose movement is produced by a hydraulic power unit which is entrusted with the task of supplying energy to a fluid (additivated oil) which is supplied with a three-phase current. In fact, thanks to it, a piston is actuated which escapes from a cylinder. In this case, the hydraulic unit must be placed inside a dedicated room, called the machine room, which must in turn be distinguished from a very specific set of characteristics:

1) presence of a metal door that can be opened outwards, provided with a lock to allow its manual opening from inside the room;

2) the enjoyment of a suitable surface (such as to vary according to the size of the system) with a minimum height of 2100 mm;

3) presence of a lifting hook placed on the vertical to the control unit;

4) presence of an aeration mechanism based on the characteristics of the building in which the lift is located.

It should however be noted that today it is also possible to replace the machine room with very small metal cabinets (900 x 400 x 2100 mm), whose positioning must be carefully studied in order to guarantee the same level of safety that distinguishes the engine room.

As far as the stroke compartment is concerned, it represents the vertical space inside which the cabin flows and its construction must take place so that it can cope with the stresses produced by the lift and be able to meet the fire-fighting requirements of the manufactured. Also in this case the walls must be made using fireproof materials, they must be smooth and painted white. Furthermore, a ventilation towards the outside must be permanently guaranteed, the section of which may vary according to the type of building.
